Quiet Time in Lanesboro: It may be quieter around town, but that means it is a perfect time to really relax and unplug in Lanesboro and Whalan for a day trip or overnight stay. While some of our Inns (including us) close for a few months during the winter, there are still plenty of lodging options. Check out availability on our Chamber lodging search, by going to lanesboro.com and doing a search on the homepage or under the "Where to Stay" section.
We have some very fun winter events in Lanesboro too! (lanesboro.com/events)
Feb. 10-12, 2023: Lovebirds in Lanesboro weekend
Feb. 18, 2023: Lanesboro Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament
March 10-12, 2023: Cabin Fever Fest weekened
Live Music & Special Events: Some of our restaurants/bars feature live music or fun events, especially on the weekends. You can often find live music at High Court Pub and Sylvan Brewing, and Root River 102 sometimes has special events or themed meal nights with reservations required. Be sure to check out their webpages for a list of events and details.
Restaurants & Bars: While some restaurants reduce their hours in the winter, each meal period should have at least one option for you. Restaurants that still operate in the winter include Home Sweet Home Cafe & Cakery, Lanesboro Pastry Shoppe, Brenda's Stockyard Cafe, Clara's Eatery, High Court Pub, Pedal Pushers Cafe, Juniper's, Sylvan Brewing, Root River Saloon, and the Lanesboro American Legion. Just be sure to call or check out a business' website to double check what is open or not.
Shopping: Shopping in downtown Lanesboro is not a seven day/week experience in the winter, but most shops (E2 Boutique, Amish Experience, Lanesboro Arts, Parkway Market & Coffee House, The Peddler, etc.) open up on the weekends and often have winter time deals. Again, just be sure to call or check out businesses' webpages to confirm hours.
Outdoor Recreation: Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center has trails for snow shoeing and even a dirt bike trail for fat tire biking. Cedar Valley Resort in Whalan has cross country ski and snow shoe rentals. If you ski on the Root River State Trail, be sure to buy a MN ski pass at the Lanesboro BP Gas Station. Our favorite winter hike (no special gear required) is Isinours State Forest unit off of Fillmore County 17 in between Lanesboro and Preston. There is a parking area (right alongside the state bike trail) and a few loop trails in this beautiful hardwood and pine forest with gorgeous vistas. Winter catch and release fishing is also open with great Root River casting spots in downtown Lanesboro (need a guide? - call Root River Rod Co.).
Family History: Winter is also a good time to get cozy with an indoor activity. Do some research into your family ties to Fillmore County by visiting the Fillmore County Historical Society Museum and Library in Fountain, MN. Fillmore County was once the most populous county in Minnesota, after all! There is just a small cost ($5) to access the library and make any copies. And the variety and depth of exhibits is not to be missed - a historic homemade airplane, toys, antique tractors, war items, geology, and more. Plan some museum time in Fountain, and become a member too (only $20-$60/year!).
If you are in need of some quiet time (it is not just for kids!), think of coming to Lanesboro and Whalan for a fun winter day trip or overnight getaway.
