Recent national headlines have featured the many necessary ice rescues on northern Minnesota lakes - this warmer winter means our lake ice just isn't ready for one of Minnesota's favorite pasttimes - ice fishing. The lack of snow and ice is not good for our northern Minnesota tourism businesses and visitors, as snowmobilers, dog sledders, skiiers, and other outdoor recreation enthusiasts can't enjoy these winter activities. I sure hope we get some snow and cold temperatures soon - I live in Minnesota for a reason!
But here in southeastern Minnesota, no ice and no snow means .... no problems!
We have no natural lakes, but our Root River watershed provides some of the best trout streams in the country, and winter is a fabulous time to enjoy catch and release on these streams and the Root River. You can book winter guided fly fishing trips with Root River Rod Co. Or stop in to pick up some fishing gear and advice. Just give them a call!
While we wait for the snow to fall to partake in snowshoeing or cross-country skiing (please, even just a few inches!), there is excellent winter hiking in and around Lanesboro. You can simply enjoy walks on the Root River State Trail and the Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail. Or, go further into nature with hikes at Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center (trails open dawn until dusk) or my personal favorite, Isinours State Forest Management Unit, in between Preston and Fountain. There is something magical about walking on the white pine needles in that forest (click on that hyperlink to view the map - there are different trail loops you can take for a shorter or longer hike).
Although this is our quiet time (the Cottage House is currently closed to overnight guests until March 29, 2024), there are still other lodging, dining, and activity options available! Be sure to check out some wonderful winter travel ideas by reading our various winter travel itineraries on our lanesboro.com website - here. You will find ideas for family fun, girls' getaway, winter angling, history buff, foodie finds, and more. You can be active or just relax this winter when you visit Lanesboro and Whalan. We are here for you - no snow, no ice, no problem!
