Happy Halloween from Lanesboro! A year ago, we had about 5" of wet, heavy snow which caused school to be cancelled and left everyone guessing how should we trick-or-treat? Too many of us had blocked the memories of Halloween 1991 or other past wintery Halloweens, so we were in a panic. But, kids got to trick-or-treat on October 31 and November 1 - they were happy!
Our downtown businesses pull out all the stops for area kids to come trick-or-treating after school. Then our Ladies Auxillary serve free hotdogs at the school, and Lanesboro ECFE (Early Childhood & Family Education) hosts a hallway party for our littlest trick-or-treaters. We know how to celebrate! Just two days ago, it was about 80 degrees in town, but today feels more like winter is coming with temps in the 30s and a steady wind. But, it won't stop the excitement of Halloween! We are ready to hand out juice boxes, Halloween stickers, rice crispies, and Fun Dip.
Deer hunters are getting ready for the season, and Lanesboro has many great places for them to stay after a long day in the woods, grasslands, or farm fields. Our region is known to have CWD, or Chronic Wasting Disease, which according to the MN DNR, is a "contatious, always-fatal brain disease that affects animals in the deer family". The DNR provides advice on what people can do to help stop the spread of CWD (information obtained from MN DNR). Action items include:
- Report any sightings of sick deer to the DNR at 888-646-6367
- Allow hunters to hunt on your property
- Test harvested deer for CWD through the DNR's free testing programs
- Use approved methods to dispose of deer carcass parts
- Don't feed deer - and make sure you know if there is a feeding ban in your area and spread the word to your neighbors
- Follow carcass movement restrictions
Also, the DNR asks for hunters to report any wildlife sightings, including the number of deer, while they are out. They can report them here. Hunting is a great tradition in our state and brings people of all backgrounds together to enjoy the great outdoors while having the opportunity to respectfully harvest an animal. It is important to know about CWD in southeastern Minnesota, even if you don't hunt. Learn more about CWD by visiting mndnr.gov/cwd.
Happy Fall, Happy Halloween, and Happy Hunting!
